May 2008

Last week Richard & I saw a young Platypus in the Werribee River.

It looked to be about 30cm long. We were watching it for some time. We saw it surface several times until it decided it didn't like the look of us.

After all the disturbance along the river over the last year or so it is a good sign to see a platypus here.

No photo unfortunately. It would have been an easy photo but we had no camera!

Members from both the Melton Environment Group and Pinkerton Landcare & Environment Groups, their families, friends and visitors enjoyed their evening at Mt. Rothwell Sanctuary.
Cr. Bob and Denise Fairclough from the City of Wyndham formed part of the group, as well as Linda Bradburn from the Shire of Melton.

Weeping grass Microlaena stipoides regeneration

The Plains Grassland area on top of the Poa escarpment was infested with Patersons curse at the beginning of the project.

With the help of the Western Water contractors and others, the area was cleared of this noxious weed by early 2006.

Tempory rabbit proof fence added and work being done to remove the last traces of weeds.  Following this, the area was seeded with Kangaroo grass.

Thankfully the native Weeping Grass - Microlaena stipoides saw this and has started to regenerate the area.

It is hoped that other native grasses and herbs etc will also be back shortly to fully regenerate this escarpment.
